Happy New Year to all you Tandem Riders...

Sunday Ride in Marlborough 31st January.

Avanti Plus Marlborough 60km Tandem Fun Ride

Tour the vineyards near Blenheim Sunday 31st January 2010.

Start at Peter Blackmore’s place 5 Brylin Crescent Blenheim at 10am.

Ride South going into Redwood Pass to the end of the tar seal. Return back to town then carry on through to the Hawksbury Valley for a coffee stop at Highfields Estate. Continue on around the Hawksbury and on to Renwick. Ride down Old Renwick Road back to Peter’s for a BBQ.

Notes for Sunday:

I think if we do the booze and food like we discussed after our last ride would be good. BYO drinks and a salad - cake etc and pay $5.00 a head for Peter to organise the meat.

Riding Notes: Avanti Plus Marlborough and Avanti Plus Nelson are hosting two easy and slow tandem rides in January 2010.

These rides are suitable for very recreational tandem riders. Gun tandem riders are invited too as they will still love the fun atmosphere and enjoy the company, while riding at a very leisurely pace.

Last June the Marlborough crew hosted us at the Kennedy’s property and we had 11 tandems turn up. This time we expect more riders. Nelson Anniversary Day is on Monday the 1st February 2010 so we expect some more Nelson riders to come along for the ride this time.

Saturday Ride from St Arnaud to Blenheim

(This will only happen if I get some entries by return email)

Avanti Plus Nelson 100km Tandem Fun Ride

St Arnaud (Lake Rotoiti) to Blenheim Saturday 30th January 2010.

Start time 1.00pm from the St Arnaud Store.

This is to be a casual and easy supported ride. Ride as far as you wish on the way to Blenheim for tomorrows ride hosted by the Blenheim group. We will not be racing but it might be hard to travel slow with such tandem friendly terrain and the usual tail wind on this down hill course.

We will have the Avanti Plus Nelson camper van in support so you can swap Stokers, Captains and whole teams if you wish along the way.

We will have a dinner in Blenheim that night to meet the local tandem riders and start the Marlborough socialising in style at one of the local eateries. (We will need numbers for catering purposes)

Bill Mitchell suggests Bings Motel for accommodation in Blenheim and maybe the Restaurant next door for dining.

Notes for Saturday:

Please advise numbers attending this ride so we can help organise drivers etc for your vehicles if you need them to be driven to Blenheim.

If you wish to partake in a more serious race then the Nelson Lakes 90 is on today too with a 9.00am start at St Arnaud. This is organised by Nelson Events, details on their website. It finishes in St Arnaud around mid day. A race or a ride on Saturday, a slow fun ride on Sunday, your choice? Let me know your wishes please?

I have just finished helping to run The Tour de Vineyards. Guess who I met at Upper Moutere village as I was setting up the feed station signs? Two of our tandem club member duos on their tandems. Craig & Sue Mangin and Peter & Gail Philipsen with their B.O.B.s in tow. Touring our Top of the South area having done Picton, Blenheim, St Arnaud, Motueka, and going on to Nelson then back to Picton. Peter & Gail had bent their rear wheel descending Kerr's Hill near Kikiwa and were limping homeward with it. They have since made it home after getting a spare wheel sent over from home to Nelson.

I do hope some of you can make it for our ride in late January.

I am toying with the idea of slotting in a tandem race/tour for Easter up this way if there is enough interest.
Let me know if you are keen and I will try and put something together.

Keep riding together!

Cheers,
Mike Watson
